December 5, 2008 – Vancouver, British Columbia. Merit Mining Corp. (TSX-V:MEM) reports that the Company has given temporary layoff notices to its employees at its Greenwood Gold operation. A small number of employees will remain for a short period of time to shut down the mine and mill in an orderly manner and to secure the Company’s assets.

The Company’s board of directors and management would like to acknowledge the outstanding efforts of our employees who have helped develop and operate the Greenwood Gold Project.

The Greenwood operation has suffered from a combination of difficulties since the commencement of commercial production in June 2008. Targeted grades at the Lexington mine have not been achieved. Mining has proven to be difficult with more dilution than expected. Mill recoveries have been lower than initial testing indicated, partly due to variability in mineralogy in the deposit. Operating costs have been significantly higher than had been predicted in the April 2007 Preliminary Economic Assessment. Work has continued over the past months to improve the operation at Greenwood, however, with the precipitous drop in metal prices, the operation has not been able to achieve positive cash flow to date.

As reported in a news release dated December 3, 2008, the Company has filed a Notice of Intention to Make a Proposal (the "Notice") under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act (“BIA”). In accordance with the provisions of the BIA, the Company's creditors will be contacted directly regarding the filing of the Notice and to facilitate discussion with the goal of achieving a solution acceptable to all parties.
