I have had conversations with one of the supervisors at San Gold about the Harmony days. The sense I got from him was that Harmony was a huge South African company that realized they did not understand the Canadian mining scene and they ran into some cultural and employee issues they were at a loss to deal with while they owned the Rice Lake mine. Considering the size of this operation relative to the rest of their operation in S. Africa, and considering the negative economic situation for gold at that time, thye decided to get out of the project rather than hang onto something that could become a long-term problem.

Thankfully Dale Ginn recognized the value and the potential of the mine and the surrounding properties, and he was able to bring together a plan that has resulted in the present day operation. Now that the price of gold is where it is, it is easy to see that this can be a very successful mining company. However, considering the amount of effort and length of time it has taken to get to this point, I now have a better appreciation of why it was not pursued by Harmony and others when the price of gold was lower.
