There was an interesting article in the Globe yesterday on the rapid development to Covid vaccines by Moderna and BioNTech. There were many good points made. Here are a few.
Both companies are start ups with no products before the pandemic.
Moderna describes itself as a technology company that happens to do biology.
Two days after the corona virus was sequenced Moderna scientists finalized a design for a vaccine working closely with the Vaccine Research Center of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
At BioNTech Dr Sahin realized that they could not do it alone so they partnered with Pfizer. (hint Don)
Pfizer gambled U.S. $2 billion of it's own money.
In 2021 Moderna expects to make U.S. $19.2 billion and BioNTech expects to reap U.S. $15.1 billion.
This article is worth a read.
I still have lots of hope for RVX science (and myself) but it is very difficult to imagine RVX being in the same league as these companies.
Perhaps we'll hear something soon?
