I believe they are taking about proteins (genes)!that are involved in human/viral interactions & the compound (drug) that can inhibit/disrupt that interaction.
The viral bait is usually a known viral protein used as bait to find out what binds to it. In that way one can map all possible viral / host interactions!
And I believe E, refers to experiments being done outside of the cells or body (Ex-Vivo).
here they identify that both RVX 208 & jq1 targetting same gene family (although we know 208 is more specific).
As you pointed out, RVX, being in a P3 clinical trials is way ahead of a preclinical compound such as jq1 from saftey & allowance for In-human used perspective!
