Agreed, options are a great tool to retain key employees and stimulate performance to achieve each employee's designated corporate objectives. Many of my clients work for big pharma and are richly rewarded for their positive contributions. They all know that pharmaceutical development is a long process and they may work a lifetime in search for a cure that may not be realized. Most are rewarded for their corporate efforts along the way and the realization that the collective efforts of all will eventually find the cure. The researchers don't generally have the means or the desire to manipulate the price.
The motive methinks is to obtain a substantial block of warrants at a discounted price in a private placement, partnership, regional deal - and investment bankers have the means. (5,000,000 stock purchase warrants at .75, 530,000 @ .9, 1,320,000 @1.44)
Just laying out some other options - we will find out soon enough
