This article is a small aside dealing with horizontal drilling for NG in NY state. Analysts often talk about the various "risks inherent in the gas industry........environmental..." (being one of the risks). This story is from Channel 36 News in NY. I don't know anything of it other than what it says. Just an interesting situation in NG field development in NY. No signs in Quebec province of any similar environmental concerns fortunately. This may impact sp of any companies with NG operations in NY.

Chemung County Upset with Natural Gas Drilling Laws

ELMIRA, NY-- Chemung County says the state is costing the Southern Tier big bucks by delaying an enviromental study about natural gas drilling methods.
Last summer, Governor David Patterson issued a moratorium on horizontal natural gas drilling untill further study on the enviromental impact of the technique was done. Gas companies are still drilling the Marcellus Shale, but New York state isn't reaping any benefits. However, Pennsylvania is, because horizontal drilling is already underway in the state.
Chemung County Chamber of Commerce is urging Albany to finish the study, and carry on with drilling. Chamber President Kevin Keeley says the state is wasting valuable time. The enviromental study is scheduled to end in late 2009. Keeley says that is way too late and by that time, New York would have already lost millions of dollars and thousands of jobs.
