To add more numbers to the extraordinary achievements. Conventionally, to produce Fumed Silica, also known as Pyrogenic Silica, you start by reducing quartz with carbon to make metallurgical grade silicon (MG-Si), which requires 12-30 kWh/kg and emits 5-10 Kg CO2 eq / Kg. Then, MG-Si is converted to Chlorsilane (SiCl4 or HSiCl3) through a chemical process consuming HCl and 30-50kWh/Kg of energy. Last, Chlorosilane is converted into Pyrogenic silica through a flame pyrolysis process, which requires the presence of hydrogen, and oxygen (air) with an energy consumption of 30-40kWh/Kg and emits 3-7 Kg CO2 eq /Kg.
In contrast, PyroGenesis Canada Inc. / PyroGense Canada inc. developed a one-step revolutionary plasma-based, low-energy (87.5-90% Less), close to zero CO2 emission green (84-88% less) process to produce Fumed Silica for HPQ Silicon Inc. Polvere to replace a lengthy, energy-intensive, and high-emission CO2 conventional industrial process.
