Well, British Columbia has a few of these places. Have even been to some of them.
Thirty years ago went to Alice Arm (far, far Northcoast. Almost Alaska) Once thriving, then down to 6 residents none of whom could get along with each other which prompted my visit.
Also have been to Ocean Falls. Once a thriving paper mill and now down to 30 residents.
We also host numerous little "outposts" like Oona River (mainly squatters) . All in all there is still some of the Wild West left in our little corner of the world.
Barkerville is perhaps our most famous. Went from Gold Rush to Gold Bust to Tourism flurishing. Life just carries on I guess.
