Barrick, Newmont Win Approval to Expand Super Pit Gold Mine

By Jason Scott

Jan. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Barrick Gold Corp. and Newmont Mining Corp., joint owners of Australia’s second-largest gold mine, won environmental approval to expand the site in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia.

The companies would be allowed to deepen the Super Pit site to 600 meters (1,968 feet) and establish waste dumps with a capacity to take 140 million metric tons of waste rock, according to a statement from the Western Australian state government today. The expansion will extend the life of the mine by up to 10 years and create more that 1,000 jobs, it said.

The Super Pit is managed by Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Ltd., jointly owned by Toronto-based Barrick, the world’s largest gold producer, and Newmont, the largest U.S. bullion producer.
