When you buy shares, they come in standard 'packages'. The size of the package, or board lot, depends on the price of the share you are buying.
I believe that if the share price is less than $1, a standard board lot is 500 shares. If greater than $1, a board lot is 100 shares. So when you see 10 board lots offerred for sale at $1.20, that would be 1000 shares (much higher price shares have a board lot of 10 shares).
If for some reason you had an odd number, say 65 shares, to sell, the brokerage house could charge you a small premium on top of their regular commission to sell the 'less than board lot' shares.
