QUITO, April 18 (Reuters) - Ecuador's suspension of exploration mining activity will halt operations of Aurelian Resources (ARU.TO: Quote, Profile, Research), Corriente Resources (CTQ.TO: Quote,Profile, Research) and IamGold (IMG.TO:Quote, Profile, Research) , said the head of a special assembly on Friday.

"This is immediate and no activity whatsoever will be allowed in the concessions of these these companies," Assembly head Alberto Acosta told Reuters in a telephone interview.

He also said he plans to introduce a motion to call for a national referendum to ban open-pit mining for metals in Ecuador. (Reporting by Alonso Soto)
