Witwatersrand Basin Africa -  South Deep Mine $US 1 billion investment decision was based on just ten drill intersections

The South Deep Mine, now under construction in the Carletonville field, will become the world’s largest gold mine with 60 million ounces of proven reserves. Boasting the world’s tallest headframe (97 meters) and fastest hoists (80 kilometers per hour), the shaft will extend to 2.7 kilometers depth with reserves defined to 3.5 kilometers depth. The $US 1 billion investment decision was based on just ten drill intersections and more than a century of accumulated knowledge about the characteristics and continuity of Witwatersrand gold deposits.
