re: 2.5 t / m**3 rock density
Different rock has different densities, but that is about correct.
Rule of thumb: water less dense than rock, 1 t / m**3. steel more dense than rock, 10 t / m**3.
Wikipedia for quartz: specific gravity of 2.65
Given the various impurities (e.g. gold!!!!) the density varies a good bit. Not point gettig fancier than that.
