Insightful conversation with the Hon. Minister François-Philippe Champagne hosted by Canada's Semiconductor Council with opening remarks from the legendary Sir Terry Matthews to a jam packed audience in Ottawa last night. A fantastic preview to today’s inaugural semiconductor summit.
1. Momentum - the time to act is now to carve out Canada’s value add role to secure semiconductor supply chain resiliency in areas that are strategic and unique to Canada from compound semiconductor to the super compute capacity necessary for AI to the embedded chips and sensors in mobility that further elevated our global leadership in the EV and battery supply chain.
2. Amplify our Bold Ambition - Canada needs to play to our strengths and be bold in our ambition - our talent and intellectual capital, our strategic trade relationships, our legacy of manufacturing capacity, our brand as trusted and respected nation and our track record and commitment to ESG.
3. Elevate and invest in our capacity to seed, grow and scale Canadian founded, IP-rich companies and attract value-add global companies who build economic prosperity both here at home and beyond our borders.
At the heart of Canada’s most valuable asset are our people starting with Canadian-led innovation and ingenuity in the past through companies like ATI Technologies (AMD), Nortel, Mitel and our future with homegrown leaders Blumind Peraso Inc. SPARK Microsystems Alphawave Semi and more. Together, the Canadian leaders, global leaders like Intel, AMD, Synopsys, IBM, Teledyne, Marvell, ST Micro+, and advanced scientific reaearch through NRC and Canada’s leading postsecondary institutions create the foundational groundwork to build a national semiconductor corridor from Bromont to Ottawa-Toronto and Vancouver for the intellectual and human capital that places Canada as a critical player in the global semiconductor industry.
According to a 2022 Accenture / GSA report, women hold only 16% of board and 13% of leadership positions. Canada not only has the opportunity, but the imperative and responsibility to lead the way in creating the most diverse semiconductor talent ecosystem and create the blueprint for a sustainable, net zero semiconductor playbook.
