The announcement by Nubis Communications yesterday (https://lnkd.in/edhZe38v) narrowed its messaging in anticipation of its participation at Optica’s Executive Forum at OFC 2024 next month (please see: https://lnkd.in/eEvzc87n), as the focus was on a joint demonstration of PCIe over optics solution (please see: https://lnkd.in/eM7WpxFC). While such a targeted approach with the news was probably done out of necessity given limited space, it comes across more effectively than its very first press release about a year ago (please see: https://lnkd.in/e-n3cFTS). While fibeReality continues to believe that Nubis’ vertical line card approach is its most valuable IP asset, the marketplace will be building an entirely new ecosystem based on the technology addressed on Tuesday (please see: https://lnkd.in/exUUj4Nb). Its partnership with Alphawave Semi (as well as with Tektronix) on the demo, provides the optics startup with a substantial amount of heft. Optimistically, a better understanding of future trends will help to lower the pressure from its investors with optical computing, despite the current valuation of Lightmatter (please see: https://lnkd.in/eecWnjux). That concept is likely decades away from full realization, and there are advantages to getting out in front with the very initial steps in that direction.

Nubis should from now on focus, like a laser beam, its marketing efforts on the VLC and PCIe plays, as together they should result in a powerful enough, yet simple story. As it did in this last release, there is no need to mention its silicon photonics capability, as that just opens the door to the pitfalls in probably becoming a module supplier, such as the apparent necessity to form a joint venture. While it appears to be fine for Nubis to mention the “linear” characteristics of its optical engine, the firm should avoid any further temptation to remain an advocate for the existing, irrational LPO narrative (please see: https://lnkd.in/gmN27Ybp).
