Cisco Systems Inc.is in reportedly talks to buy optical chip technology company Luxtera Inc.
Bloomberg cited unnamed sources who said the San Jose networking giant beat out rival bids from other companies that include Intel Corp. and Broadcom Inc.
The price paid for the Carlsbad-based company is expected to be in the hundreds of millions of dollars.
Luxtera was figured to be worth about $208 million after a venture round in 2014, according to PitchBook Data. It has raised about $172 million from investors who include New Enterprise Associates, Tokyo Electron VC, August Capital, Sevin Rosen Funds and Lux Capital.
The company's products help to transfer information between server computers in data centers, as well as in mobile phone network base stations. CEO Greg Young was previously at Santa Clara-based chip giant Intel and Broadcom, now headquartered in San Jose.
