Exchange traded equity options are "physical delivery" options. This means that there is a physical delivery of the underlying stock to or from your brokerage account if the option is exercised. The owner of an equity option can exercise the contract at any time prior to the exercise deadline set by the investor's brokerage firm. Generally this deadline occurs on the option's last day of trading. On and after February 15, 2015, the expiration date will be the third Friday of the expiration month. If this third Friday happens to be an exchange holiday, then the last day is the third Thursday of the month. Check with your brokerage firm about its procedures and deadlines for instruction to exercise any equity options. After the option's expiration date, the equity option will cease to exist.
