"What motivates these lies"

Sometimes there is a fine line between lying and being overly optimistic or being blinded by one's ego.  This includes past statements from both the CFO and CEO.  How often has shareholders expectations from what has been said only to become crushed by reality.  The trouble is that there never seems to be any accountability from those   making such misstatements whether it was done on purpose or not.
