The Photonics Checklist ........Photonic IP Core Library Standard Draft 1.0 ...... Mark Stansberry .... January 10, 2024
Prerelease Excerpt from Upcoming Poet Technologies Report and the first draft of the Photonic IP Core Library Standard.
"Photonic Intellectual Property Cores (IP Cores) are the building blocks of photonic integrated circuits. Like electronic IP cores, optical IP Cores are designed as software coded blocks and hardware coded blocks. Software optical IP cores are "not" foundry or process specific, while hardware optical blocks are process and foundry specific.
Optical Hardware IP Core Libraries are available through optical chip foundries, just like hard electronic IP core libraries are available through semiconductor chip foundries. Photonics EDA companies also have optical core libraries that are compatible with different optical process platforms from different optical foundry vendors. This allows optical system designers to create photonic integrated circuits with reusable blocks, saving considerably on design time.
Today, electronic IP core designs vastly outnumber optical IP core designs. To expedite the development of optical IP cores, design road maps are needed in addition to a Photonic IP Core Library Classification System. In the sketch below, one view of a top level Photonic IP core class structure is shown. The Photonics IP Core Database Rev 1.0 presently has over 60 primary Photonic IP Core classes and numerous subclasses and attributes. Well over 1000 IP optical core classes in all.
