Just took a very quick look at the patent and from what I can see there is a whole new world of applications enabled by this patent. I probably should not be commenting yet but I am excited by what I am seeing.

It would appear that my last post re POET potentially working with VCSELs and the problems associated with scattering are dealt with in this patent. As well as integration from surface mount to planar waveguide coupling.

These 3d mirrors which are formed in the waveguide layers of the optical interposer control/eliminates beam divergence by changing the spot size between devices. They focus and resize the beam to maximize coupling as well as configuring surface emitting (VCSEL) and surface mounted photodetectors for planar operation.
