Silicon PCBs. Passage from the upcoming paperback edition of the POET Technologies Semiconductor Company Profiles Report, The Dawn of the Nanophotonics Age"

One cannot talk about POET Technologies without talking about interposers, interconnects, chiplets, and silicon printed circuit boards (PCBs). Silicon PCBs represents a complete change in the electronics and photonics design and manufacturing dynamics. Forbes magazine rated Cerebras Systems as the most successful AI technology company in 2023. Cerebras' artificial intelligence, data center server and cluster technology is based on Silicon PCBs, a technology that has allowed Cerebras to build the largest chip in the world and a healthy customer base.

A silicon PCB is effectively a silicon wafer that has been patterned with nanometer wires and vias, such as to customize the interconnection between hundreds of individual die that have been fabricated on the wafer. This avoids the whole process of having to interconnect hundreds of individual die with much wider PCB traces on a traditional PCB, saving on power consumption, board size and at the same increasing processing speed

Another type of  silicon PCB is a metal-only pre patterned silicon PCB, which is a silicon wafer which is pre patterned with nanometer metal traces and vias, but there are not any chip die on the wafer. Chiplets, electronic optical die, interposers, and other silicon interconnect metal wire matrixes are attached to the silicon wafer which has been predesigned to interconnect all the placed chiplets, die and optical interposers together.

POET's optical interposer is the interconnecting hub that ties together the electronic signal  light signal worlds. One goal today is to place customized optical interposers onto metal-only Silicon PCBs. The idea here is to reduce the power, increase the bandwidth, and lower the costs more than what presently can be done with electronic signal based superchips built with Silicon PCBs, as Cerebras has done.
