I am pretty sure that they are always working towards next generation stuff increasing the device library.  They began working on diffraction gratings a while ago. These serve a number of roles but below is one application associated with gain chips:

Gain chips are semiconductor optical elements used as the optical gain medium of external cavity laser diodes12. They are used as a tunable light source with a frequency selection filter, such as a diffraction grating, to alter the oscillation wavelength12. Gain chips are an essential part of the development of a tunable diode laser or a high-stability external cavity diode laser 

Not sure whether the following is applicable but it does demonstrate an increased level of flexibility and connectivity.
