"Photonics is becoming a semiconductor technology. Integrated photonics have found their way into a wide range of products and technologies, which enables the overall communications market representing ~$4.1 trillion or roughly 5% the value of the $94 trillion global economy."

Pozo pointed out that the single biggest challenge for the wide adoption of integrated photonics is the lack of people to work on photonic-based products.
