Google's patents on opto-electronic hybrid integration platform, optical sub-module, opto-electronic hybrid integration circuit, and process for fabricating platform are expired. There are competitors with somewhat newer, active patents, however their issues preclude them from being usable.
Right around the year 2000, photonics was supposed to takeoff, but size, power and heat were the primary issues making the technology not ready for prime time. POET has resolved those issues and then some.
