POET vs AAOI - 1 year chart

This gives a little bit of support to the idea that some macro trends are at play, but it also shows (I think) how institutions can get their positions on a low-float stock. AAOI has about 26 million shares. Yahoo notes about 32% institutional ownership, while POET is below 3%.
