The firms buying large positions, in the hundreds of thousands of shares, are guided by a portfolio manager that has made a concious decision that they want to invest in POET. Thèy have done the research and clearly liked POET's prospects. 

The firms buying in thousands are adding POET to their various Nasdaq-replicating portfolios. Their algorithms have guided their purchase based upon risk and return optimization. That a few of theses now own POET speaks to its relative strong stock price verus drawdown risk since listing on the Nasdaq.

I'm happy to see that both types of professional investor are buying, each validates my choice.
