Agravaine...do you have any idea the amount of time and duration of discussion that has been devoted to talking about the approaches that the silicon industry has taken to deposit III-V materials and then process that III-V material and turn it into a laser that works? The difficulty first in process and how accurately thermal gradients have to be managed to avoid material stress across the mismatched lattice structure.
POET is Silicon Photonics 2.0. where the best material sets are used...known good die.Thermal channeling and heat sinking by design on a platform with athermal characteristics. The flexibility this offers is the reason POET has been able to achieve so many designs in such a short period of time with limited funds as opposed to the many years and the amount of money spent by the silicon industry trying to make a light source work with the monolithic approach.
It is also why POET has provided the silicon photonics industry with a remote laser source using the POET platform. POET's optical interposer platform allows highly accurate and very low loss filtering with the connectivity, coupling and transmissions efficiencies that are unmatched in existing silicon photonics approaches. It is enabled in a CMOS fabrication flow at temperatures low enough to limit lateral stress and wafer distortion. This also allows POET the ability for wafer size conversion to 12 inch bulk silicon to take advantage of the economics that the semiconductor industry has seen.
What would be terrifying to me is being so heavily invested in POET and not knowing these basic facts.
