treborjim,
Never going to happen! While new advances in medical technology will often work in conjuction with other modalities they never replace them entirley. Xrays were discovered over a 125 years ago and they are the baseline for just about every medical diagnosis.
While Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT) is very intersting and in my opinion will definetly have medical benefits it won't replace biopsies or other advanced imaging practices. It appears to be useful when direct core samples are in high risk locations or inaccessible. However it takes a long period of time before new advancements are adopted and widly accepted throughout the medical community.
MRI is considered the gold standard when it comes to imaging. Its superior at characterizing pathologies with accurate temporal and spatial resolution. And with all of the advancements they are much quicker and more tolerable than they used to be.
