Fairchij: The wavelength error is proportional to waveguide dimensional deviation. So now consider the expansion as a result of temperature variation and we come to one of the biggest challenges associated with silicon photonics.

Simply put, the more athermal you are, the smaller and the more energy-efficient your micro-ring modulators can be.
