Lebowski101: Is this the same thing? or different things? what was the product prototype Intel used today to showcase their new tech?
Intel has an extensive Intel Lab 2020 web page with a couple of videos that are well worth watching!
What they are showing are different things than POET’s, and also very impressive ones, especially the micro-ring modulators!
I find it interesting that they decribe the micro-ring modulator as being extremely temperature sensitive, so they have to use heaters to compensate for temperature changes.
And, wow, they have an all-silicon photodetector!
Intel does not deploy wafer-scale integration, I believe. They are showing just a photonic chip and an electrical chip, stacked together in a 3D fashion using copper pillars. If they’d do wafer-scale assembly, I believe they would have shown it.
They didn’t show any product prototypes, though, just demo devices. Well, it’s Intel Lab 2020, isn’t it?
Make sure you watch the overview video on all the technologies and at least the breakout presentation on integrated photonics, which is near the bottom of the page.
Oh, there’s also a presentation on neuromorphic computing you might be interested in.
