Not to belabor this, but the optical devices you reference in the sensor are photodiodes. They convert ambient light directly into an electric signal. They are calling these "optical channels", but they mean the electric output of the photodiode. The only optical signal is environmental light represented on p18 of the spec as two arrows in the lower left corner pointing at the photodetector.
