Britain is to partner with Huawei for parts of its 5g network. Yet a cautionary note regarding China emerges during the 5 nation security conference.  It’s interesting that these two facts should emerge at the same time.  Clearly this is diplomatic signaling to China to clean up its act.  These events drew significant denials from Huawei that it is closely coupled with Chinese Government .

Britain’s Brexit Brinkmanship is not going to get in the way of building links with China. I was recently told by a Chinese Student at Cambridge University that Britain is admired in China despite its Imperial past.  In fact a recent Chinese Governmnet language policy statement states that Chinese English language students are encouraged to speak English with an English accent.  What is an English accent I don’t know given the proliferation of regional accents in the UK including my own Welsh lilt.

The relatively smooth transition of government in Hong Kong has left solid links between China and UK and a fair degree of mutual respect.  Unlike the more hysterical recent reactions to China seem to emerge across the pond, this builds mutual respect.  The UK builds close links with China eg. Liverpool University has significant numbers of Chinese student.  However, they will be returning home speaking ‘Scouse’ (English as spoken by the Beatles) hardly standard southern counties BBC English.

No matter, I am sure that Bill Rings influence in the emerging photonics industry in the UK will ensure that POET will have a part to play in building 5g networks in the UK.  I suspect that the Huawei announcement may well be a very good thing for PTK shareholders in the long run whether the hail from Canada, USA or Brexit Blighted Blighty.
