Well Baba, it would really depend on what he managed to reduce the forward viltage of

LED? Reduce the forward voltage drop?

Wafers? voltage is applied across surfaces to induce hot chemical vapours to stratify at clculated locations and depth.

Lasers? higher forward voltage for diodes is noisy. Reducing forward voltage would reduce noise and  stabilizes the diodes consistency . 

Sooooo... a little more information is required before you could determine what his accomplishment relates to, but it is very likely Denselight related rather than something newer of PoET's

Best guess?

Given the 7 year time frame, most likely laser related.
