There is lot of good detail provided in this new presentation. I notice a statement that has never been used before to address the perceived technology risk that has been expressed here. There is no real way for most to make a judgement on what to expect so many assume a wait and see approach as far as commercial viability (I’ll believe it when customers are using the products).
POET Optical Interposer Platform
• Meets a long-standing industry need to integrate photonics and electronics in the same chip-scale package
• Proprietary technology dramatically reduces cost of key components in optical transceivers and ASIC’s
• First and only company to introduce true chip-scale integration and waferscale assembly and test of photonics devices
• Minimal engineering risks to completion of platform applications
It does not surprise me that they can make this statement as we are not talking about a level of complexity associated with patterning atomic structures associated with cutting edge electronic circuits but much, much larger photonic waveguides. The active devices that they are connecting with these waveguides are well established commercial operating devices that are modified to include base material waveguides which connect to the dielectric by automated processes that have been developed by industry and have widespread use.
POET is tying it all together in a very ingenious platform that allows the devices to operate very efficiently without impacting neighboring devices.
Generally I would have said that the physical growth of this company, the staffing and partnerships are really enough to indicate a high level of confidence and expectation in the commercial viability of the platform but here it is in this new presentation for the first time.
Minimal risk in platform applications: over time there will be many many applications. Anywhere where light needs to be connected to a device. Not just the first platform application but many applications that will be required in high volume to drive the future. Growing applications that the world is adopting so that machines can understand the environment around them. Medical devices, Wavelength sensing that covers a very wide spectrum.
