Agreed TMI, what should be emphasized here is the ultimate goal of bringing down costs, thus providing less expensive solutions to customers. When performance is relatively equal, as it will be when manufacturing to a standard, it all comes down to cost per widget. As Suresh has stated many time, this is what industry cares about.
This article provides some background into why manufacturers are looking for alternatives to using interposers. According to the article, use of an interposer can add significant manufacturing cost, so the effort by many to develop equally effective, but cheaper solutions. Of course, what POET has gone and done is just make the interposer containing device so much cheaper that it completely eliminates the cost issue, and could even effectively undercut these other (still in development??) so called “less expensive” alternatives. The added bonus here is that POET hasn’t had to reinvent the wheel to make the product cheaper, which is significant when considering supply chain, manufacturing capacity, etc. and all of the other things which could constrain full adoption of new or novel technologies.
