Principal Waveguide Optics R&D Engineer

JOB DESCRIPTION

• To design active waveguides and echelle waveguides for optical beam propagation for various photonic applications in the sensing and data communication markets.
• Design and develop dielectric waveguide planar lightwave circuits (PLC) devices based on dielectric waveguides on Silicon wafers. The waveguide components include spot-size converter, AWG based Mux and Demux, Echelle based Mux and Demux, Bragg gratings, multilayer vertical couplers, power splitters and taps, micro-ring resonator devices, and couplers between passive and active waveguides for optical communication and optical sensors.
• Perform optical waveguide device simulations using techniques including Eigenmode Expansion, Beam Propagation Method, FDTD with simulation tools such as FIMMWAVE/FIMMPROP, Optiwave, Lumerical. Perform device layout GDSII generation and optimization.
• Analysis of dielectric waveguide material characterization and device performance to meet design & manufacturing requirements. Work with test lab members to develop/improve test solutions for precise material characterization and optical device performance testing.
• Manage new product development project, including providing technical guidance to waveguide wafer fabrication team (on waveguiding materials properties, device fab requirements, in-process optical parameter monitoring methods, and optical performance test method to support waveguide fabrication and integration).
• Report generation of design and simulation outcome with support of experimental data, where available. Build up database of related device design white papers, and management of all design documentation repository. Maintenance of all engineering software, as well as training of new users to the respective software
  Specific Experience
• Minimum 5 years’ working experience with technical background in planar ligh twave circuit (PLC – AWG, mux/demux) product development with close working collaboration with 8-inch Silicon wafer fab processes on product R&D and improvement 
• Proven working experience in passive optical communications products and program management in the manufacturing industry
