It is definitely automated.

From my experience, these chip manufacturers actually do run multiple shifts. I am talking within Canada, not sure about Singapore and it is three shifts. It is a long arduous task, without three shifts I think it would take too long to be reasonable for any real progress to be made (the link that BettingMan posted showing the manufacture of a wafer stated three weeks to make a wafer).
