Maybe the big guys who want to do the NREs or license the POET stuff insisted on waiting for this patent approval before putting their $$$ in as they wanted/needed to have patent protection on the development of their products and licenses.

Note that this patent was applied for in June of 2015 so some of the new exec and BOD (Suresh (June) and Subhash (April) and DeBonis and Lavonisky - POET BOD (April)) were just appointed.
