My understanding is that each patent application is not considered in a vacuum. Patents almost always reference previous patents, and taken in totality, are determined to be state of the art by the examiner.

Certainly once previously referenced patents are defined as state of the art, new patent applications based on those can be processed more quickly.

I would concur that this particular patent grant is the key one in Poet's patent history.
