to give you an idea, here's the DDMI spec for it -- a whopping 32 pages just to describe the monitoring functions!
it might sound easy at first glance, but "shovelling photons around" is a pretty complex thing once you've decided to roll up your sleeves to start working under the hood.
some of the SFF specification standards documents can be a thousand pages long.
