KGBINC: As FJ said in his response, during the CC, they said that they were ahead of schedule on many fronts. If that is the case, elaborate. POET isn't a secret anymore.

I cannot remember FJ having said something like that. However, please look through the audio transcript and you'll find what they actually said:

13:14 – … We have completed the move to Silicon Valley from Toronto and Connecticut about a full quarter ahead of schedule.

  • So they are indeed ahead of schedule, but not on many fronts, but just regarding the move to Silicon Valley.

15:37 – … The transitioning of foundries has caused some initial delays in technology transfer, but we are working with our new supplier to mitigate any cascading delays to our milestones. The initial results received in the last month are very promising and reassures our belief that we can recover our schedules and meet the milestones we have previously announced.

  • There is no word of being ahead of schedule, but rather of having gotten behind because of the move from Anadigics to Wavetek. And there's hope to catch up in order to meet the milestones, i.e. discrete VCSEL, detector, and FET circuitry in Q1. Set your expectations around the end of March (as announced) and you might save yourself some disappointments.

21:15 – … We realize that many shareholders would like to see a steady stream of updates from the company. Of course, business developments in various places in the world don’t follow a set schedule. But as the last few weeks have demonstrated we intend to keep our shareholders apprised just as soon as it is appropriate for us to do so.

  • I think this is an important statement, especially with regards to the recent debate about project timelines here. There's a huge difference between running, say, a print shop or an airline on one side and developing and introducing a new product into a global market together with partners in "various places in the world" on the other side.

The former is simple, i. e. it is a highly standardized business where procedures are well-established and everything is known. What POET is doing, however, is complicated (more is known than unknown). After all, POET has left the state of being complex (more is unknown than known). – For the sake of completeness, besides simple, complicated and complex processes, there are also chaotic ones, where very little is known.

If we can agree on not lumping all those different kinds of projects together, we might get a better understanding of schedules, timelines and milestones.
