Facebook and other companies have joined hands to improve the telecom infrastructure around the world

VentureBeat reports that Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ:FB) is investing in the future of telecom. The social networking powerhouse announced the formation of the Telecom Infra Project (TIP) at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) today. The TIP is expected to bring the world together through advancements in telecom hardware and infrastructure.

Facebook announced the project’s launch through a blog post: “Every day, more people and more devices around the world are coming online, and it’s becoming easier to share data-intensive experiences like video and virtual reality. Scaling traditional telecom infrastructure to meet this global data challenge is not moving as fast as people need it to. We know there isn’t a single solution for this, and no one company can tackle the problem alone.”

Subsequently, Facebook’s partners in this journey include Deutsche Telekom (German), EE (UK), Globe Telecom (Philippines), and SK Telecom (South Korea). Apart from these companies, Intel and Nokia are also going to be part of the alliance. Ironically, India is nowhere to be seen on that list.

The TIP will allow telecommunication networks to create new hardware, helping them connect more people to their services. Subsequently, this will also work to improve network quality. In any case, Facebook will benefit from this move as it will get to sign up millions of additional users.

Facebook, along with other tech giants such as Google are working to connect the world to the internet. While Google’s Project Loon is working to beam Internet to remote and rural areas through hot air balloons, the social media giant has other plans. The social media company recently deployed the Free Basics program, which allows users in developing countries to access the internet, mainly Facebook and other partner sites for free. While the move was well praised around the world, the company recently hit a roadblock in India, as the country’s regulatory authorities deemed the program illegal due to net neutrality issues

Subsequently, Facebook has also been working on the Aquila Drone. The next generation technology features a solar powered drone that will beam Internet around the world. While all these projects are helping people connect, telecom infrastructure on the ground is not advanced enough to provide desired services, as experienced by users in developed areas.

Facebook has been quite open with its technology. The Open Compute Project (OCP) is another example of how its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, wants to create an open-source and environment-friendly way to operate data centers. The social network encourages developers and other technical workers to send in their recommendations on how to make efficient data centers around the world.
