After this great NR showing me that POET is on track to commercialisation of their product, some thoughts about:
What feature size will POETS VCSEL transceiver use?
According to the info I found Wavetek is using UMCs fab 6A, which is a 6 inch fab working at 0,45um, this is 450nm. So it seems this is good enough for POETS transceiver chip?!
For a VCSEL they possibly will need a relatively big emitting surface. I found that the cavity length of VCSELs is typically 1-3 wavelengths of the emitted light. (3x650nm) , and the CMOS structures to drive the device will not be very complex.
Last year we always discussed about lab to fab at 90 and 40nm and relevant milestones (RO). I guess this was more related to CPU and memory applications and asked by a different fruity vertical.
So it seems for this VCSEL tec 40nm quality is absolutely not needed. This could also be the reason why low price MOCVD (epiworks) is good enouch and no Molecular Beam Epitaxy is needed. And one reason why POET seems ahead of their schedule. Al the lab work was done long time ago, and it is all about lab to fab?
Low hanging fruit!
