....It cited sources with knowledge of Apple's lab as saying that the lab aims to produce thinner, lighter, brighter and more energy-efficient screens. The sources said that Apple is keen to move to organic LEDs in a bid to make screens even thinner, as such displays do not require a backlight.
According to the report, Apple's efforts in developing screens are expected to lower its dependence on Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Display Inc. of South Korea, and Sharp Corp. and Japan Display Inc. of Japan.
The report described the Apple lab as a "secret laboratory" for developing new screens. There was no comment forthcoming from anyone at the lab.
