Ran into an old acquaintance at the kid's soccer game today. The only genuine honest to god serial entrepreneur I know in town. He mentioned his latest venture, which is getting traction in the IoT space. (Internet of things). He's got a product in Lowes already. I would say he's ahead of the curve. At any rate, I responded with my 30 second elevator pitch for PTK. Guy didn't miss a beat: "...well, Moore's law isn't done, it's just done in silicon..." RIGHT! No, he hadn't heard of PTK, but he was very surprised that it was a public co already, because he's on his second funding round (private co, venture capital etc.), and he's already got a godamn product on the shelves! I explained that they were in the solar business before, but thanks to PC, they were able to pivot, recapitalize, and move forward. He was interested and impressed. But my point is to say that, from this conversation I gained a new perpective on our place in the market. Most days, PTK trades like a private company. Nobody "cares" because the risk profile is just, well, too high. For the past 12-18 months they have been showing the tech, and I have NO doubt that everyone is duly impressed, but nobody can act on it. Secondly, I think it's important to acknowledge how lucky we are to be on this ride at all. If PTK was still private, and hadn't had its near death experience in the solar business, we would all be elsewhere. So here's me raising my glass on Halloween (in San Francisco this night is bigger than New Year's Eve, I shit you not), thanking my lucky stars to be involved with a golden ticket, front row and center for the next 12 months. I personally think the market is going to fall apart next year, but with $20m in the bank, I am going to think of PTK as if it was private, doing its thing, head down. Yes, of course I want a respectable valuation ASAP, but if I have to wait, I just will.
