The technology was actually owned by the University of Wisconsin, but Apple had used it without their consent. As soon as it was discovered the two Indian Engineers Sued Apple for $234 million, with the help of their university. The fines were estimated to a whopping $800 billion, but Apple has somehow managed to reduce the loss.

WARF also sued Intel for the same thing previously, but Intel cleverly took the deal off the court and settled it for an undisclosed amount of money.
