Since it is not Wednesday yet, we don't know how POET's VCSEL will fit into the overall strategy, so this is hard to assess. However, I think we should consider the following:
- The POET technology is so much more than a recipe for a VCSEL! The VCSEL is not the end of what POET can deliver, but just the start. However, we shouldn't be surprised to have competition here. There are companies that have been building VCSELs for years, they are experienced, and they are improving their products. Remember, they are not building their VCSELs with silicon (can't lase), but with III-V materials. In this context it is impressive what POET as a newcomer will bring to the market: a top-notch 50 GHz VCSEL. It might even have additional features setting it apart from the competition, but we haven't been told about any, so the conservative assumption is there are none.
- The global market should be large enough for the productions of IQE, POET/Anadigics, and more, especially at the forecasted growth rates.
All IMHO, of course, and to be corrected by the conference call.
