Okay, I received a complaint regarding my criticism about the removal of novogus' post containing the link to Jingming Yao's LinkedIn profile. I think I should explain and elaborate somewhat.

Whenever something happens that has or could have some negative impact, the question is how to deal with it and if and how to inform the public. This is called risk communication. Risk communication has to be done in a responsible and educated manner, if possible by a risk communication expert.

The fundamental principle in risk communication is trust.

The people you are communicating with want to know whether they can trust you or not. If they are trusting you, they are more likely to believe you when you are explaining the problem and its consequences. However, if people don't trust you, they won't believe your explanations even if you are honest. Instead they will assume you are covering up the truth and the problem and its consequences are much worse than you are stating.

So building or regaining trust is everything.

Removing posts with supposedly negative contents will have the opposite impact of what you intended:

  • The truth will come to the light anyway.
  • You lost your trust and created mistrust.

For much more about risk communication, I recommend Peter M. Sandman's website http://www.psandman.com/ and especially this article about what happened when a company tried to cover up a real problem and the information leaked: http://www.psandman.com/articles/PCBs.htm.

I hope you can better understand my stance now. Thank you.
