Oh, "tone" is difficult! Two reasons:

This is a written conversation lacking much of the emotions that are communicated back and forth in a face to face conversation. This may lead to misunderstandings.
English is not everyone's mother tongue. (Hey, I know what I am saying!) Posters could easily pick "wrong" words or "wrong" wordings without any evil intentions.
