The enterprise of Icera bought more only in 2011 by Nvidia has developed LTE modems for the integration in Tegra-mobile processors which were late, however, long and found few buyers.
In a short announcement Nvidia informs to close the LTE section bought more in 2011 Icera with 500 employees. However, one also is openly for sales.
Originally one has shopped Icera with the aim to participate in the Smart phon-revolution, namely with a leading platform from application processor and integrated modem. However, since that time one has changed the aim position and wants to reach quickly growing markets with Gaming, Cloud applications and in automobiles (automotives). 4G-LTE-Modem are meant by Icera – presumably i410 or i500 – is enough for the purposes of Nvidia next year and, in addition. Later one wants to co-operate with other partners.

What means this announcement for the application of Tegra processors in Smartphones and Tablets, explains Nvidia possibly on Thursday after close of the stock market by the image of the results of the first quarter of the business year 2016.
Tegra without LTE?
Nvidia had announced already in the beginning of 2013 the Tegra 4 with ARM Cortex-A15, but without modem, and the a little later Tegra 4i (Gray) with Cortex-A9. He was used after long delays which deal supposedly with the complicated certifications for international LTE nets, only in 2014 in the Wiko WAX. Otherwise has found with CPU and GPU rather stale Tegra 4i few buyers.
Also Intel does itself hard to gain a foothold with Atom-SoCs without LTE or even UMTS in the Smart phon-market. The market leader Qualcomm scores with integrated (LTE-) modems, also MediaTek has such ARM-SoCs on offer. (ciw)
